This Just In: Emotions are Important

I had a client recently who was frustrated by his organizations inability to get everybody in the organization pulling in the same direction. “They should read the shareholder’s annual report. Then they would know what we’re trying to do.”

Sigh.

Here are the facts: people make decisions, memories, and decisions based on their (sometimes unconscious) emotional state. The lastest brain science research shows that:

  • New experience, creating new neural pathways, can physically alter the brain
  • Memories are also affected by how we retrieve them.
  • Memory and cognitive ability (being able to reason) can’t work without emotions

Want to motivate people? Figure out the why. The how and what will follow.
